Performs routine, major and preventive maintenance and repair of ferryboats, landings, shore facilities, marine equipment/machinery and grounds. Leads the work of other employees performing marine maintenance and repair work . Work requires frequent contact with private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence .
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent plus five (5) years experience in the repair and maintenance of ferryboats, landings, marine equipment and machinery and related ferry facilities plus required U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) rated Oiler or Greater. For Galveston Ferry Operations: Must have or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within ninety (90) days of the date of hire. (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)

Performs repair of machinery, equipment, systems and components, including but not limited to diesel engines, generators, electric motors, pumps, compressors, starters, clutches and bearings.
Performs specified and routine periodic preventative maintenance checks and adjustments of machinery, equipment and systems.
Performs routine ferryboat maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to, refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts and machinery, replacing batteries, changing cables and cleaning and pumping out bilges.
Participates in periodic all hands drills.
Cleans engine room, washes down ferryboats, chips rust and paints ferryboats as needed.
Cleans shop and maintains grounds.
Assists with daily log of watch activities, operating machinery and equipment statistics.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must have a mariner's license, certificate of registry, or merchant mariner's document at time of application.
Required to work weekends and holidays.
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis.
Driver 's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.
Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.
External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.
Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.
