The vice president for Outreach and International Affairs (OIA) will bring facilitative, strategic leadership to this vital enterprise at Virginia Tech, articulating the vision for outreach and engagement efforts in support the universityâ??s long range plan and collaborating to foster innovation and growth. Outreach and International Affairs is a vibrant, dynamic, and diverse organization with a singular mission: to share the best of Virginia Tech by facilitating faculty and staff working integrally with communities locally and throughout the world. The work of OIA (

) is central to Virginia Techâ??s engagement mission, but is also so much more. Its institutes and centers create community partnerships and economic development projects, offer continuing and professional education programs, and build collaborations to enrich discovery and learning, all with the overarching goal of improving quality of life. Outreach and International Affairs leads Virginia Tech's presence on five continents with robust international research and education programs. Its six Commonwealth Campus Centers focus on research, graduate education, and professional development in a regional context across Virginia. Blacksburg-based centers are dedicated to community-based student engagement, providing language and culture experiences, policy and governance, economic development, and continuing education. The vice president will provide leadership and guidance to a team of strong leaders making a mark in the world of research and engagement both globally and within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Key Responsibilities Include...

Providing strategic leadership and guidance to local and global engagement initiatives in support of the universityâ??s long range plan

Developing sustainable business models and securing external funds to expand opportunities to impact local and global communities

Working with faculty, researchers, and communities to address local and global economic development needs, including leading U.S. government-funded projects around the world that aim to improve food security, natural resource management, advancement of technology, and sustainability

Overseeing the university's global centers, international agreements and collaborations with institutions abroad, and related international support services

Promoting the sharing of knowledge, research, and skills through robust continuing and professional education programming

Overseeing a portfolio of programming and services at the Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center, the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, the Virginia Tech Research Center-Arlington Executive Briefing Center, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research and Commonwealth Campus Centers

Facilitating opportunities for students, faculty and staff to pursue service learning opportunities with community organizations

Actively participating in various university committees

Minimum Qualifications

Terminal degree in area of expertise

Distinguished record of leadership and achievement in one or more of the following areas: outreach/engagement, global or international affairs, or economic development

Demonstrated successful experience providing leadership and oversight to a large, complex service organization

Demonstrated expertise in financial management of an organization with multiple funding sources and revenue streams

Demonstrated ability to work with leaders in the public and private sectors to promote collaboration across program areas

Demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with academic, philanthropic and/or international communities

Demonstrated ability to secure external funding (grants, contracts, private funding)

Demonstrated experience in leading and managing large-scale projects

Experience with higher education setting
