Overview:
Directly responsible for the management of the laboratory’s administrative, technical and scientific functions in order to provide optimal quality, timely, and cost-effective laboratory services. Coordinates the performance of a variety of complex clinical laboratory analyses on blood, body fluids, and other biological specimens to obtain data, which may be used in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease. In accordance with the hospital bylaws and within the framework of the hospital’s philosophy, goals, performance objectives, operating policies and procedures established by the hospital management.

The director of laboratory services coordinates the day-to-day management and supervision in the laboratory, establishes and recommends the laboratory capital and operational budgets, establishes short and long term planning, initiates and maintains department and hospital policies and procedures, prepares routine and special reports, attends and chairs staff and committee meetings, and effectively manages all assigned resources. Directly responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and administering all functions within the laboratory. Performs additional procedures and related duties as assigned, following established professional standards and practices within the field of laboratory medicine.

Education:
Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or a closely related scientific field from a regionally accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program with current certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent awarded by a nationally recognized professional certifying agency. Licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Medical Technologist General Supervisor. Additionally, a master’s degree in business or health administration or specific formal course work and/or CE relating to the practical aspects of applies business theory to the management of a clinical laboratory.

Experience:
Desirable characteristics include a proficiency in written and verbal communications, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, a minimum of two (2) + years of management experience in a healthcare institution. Must be able to follow directions and perform work according to department standards when no direction is given. Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress.
