The 39 th Street Gallery and Project Space is looking for 1 gallery intern per semester with the potential for an internship to span several semesters if desired.
The 39 th Street Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in the Gateway Arts Center at Brentwood, MD (GAC@B). The 39 th Street Gallery presents solo and group shows, as well as projects which allow artists to explore new ideas in a gallery setting where the public is invited to observe the creation of new work. In addition to exhibits, programming includes artist talks, lectures and other supportive programming.
The Gateway Arts Center is located in the Gateway Arts District of Prince George's County. In addition to the 39 th Street Gallery, the GAC@B houses two galleries on the first floor, classroom space, and 13 artist studios.
Hours and days
Interns would be minimally responsible for gallery sitting a two-hour shift each week and be available to work exhibit receptions every other month. Gallery hours are 7-9pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and 12-4pm on Saturdays. (split into two 2 hour shifts) Additional hours may be required as well but these are more flexible.
Candidates will be passionate about visual arts and motivated to gain experience in a gallery setting. Qualities necessary for the position include
Arts education and/or experience working for an arts-based business or organization is strongly desired
Basic computer knowledge with understanding of social media
Good written and oral communication skills
Responsible, punctual, enthusiastic, with positive attitude
An interest in learning all aspects of running a gallery, from administrative to art handling
Duties may include:
Assisting Gallery staff
On-line research data collection
Updating e-mailing lists
This is an unpaid internship. We are amenable to structuring the internship to be eligible for college credit.
