The Data Communications (DataComm) business unit within TE Connectivity has an opportunity for a Director, Engineering to lead its core product engineering group. The position may be based in Shanghai, China or Harrisburg, PA. The Core products group within DataComm contains our legacy and fully launched-to-manufacturing product lines encompassing the vast majority of our nearly $1B in revenue. The Director will lead an organization of approximately 75 engineers across the globe but with emphasis on the Americas, and particularly in the near future, China.
DataComm services the Data Center, Communications and Wireless industries with a variety of high-speed connectors and applications. The business is investing heavily in new products in the high-speed copper and fiber applications. The Core Engineering Leader will play an integral part in finalizing the transition of these “invest-to-win” products to our manufacturing facilities and sustaining engineering facilities.
While the business is investing heavily on growth engineering in order to power the future, the Core product group, supported by Core engineering, provides the funds and resources necessary to sustain our critical investment levels. As a result, a key requirement of the Core Engineering Director’s position is to maintain relatively low levels of engineering spend to support the sustaining activities in the Core product group. The selected individual will report directly to the Vice President and CTO of the DataComm business and will maintain a strong business partnership with the leader of the Core Product Management Group.
The Core Engineering Director will be key member of the business’ leadership team and the Company is seeking a strong engineering leader to potentially backfill the VP Engineering / CTO within twenty-four months.
The position will be responsible for primarily managing the sustaining engineering for these product lines. In addition, the position will work closely with customers, sales, product management, manufacturing, procurement and suppliers to drive efficiencies through the manufacturing process to cost savings through materials and purchasing.
Create and communicate vision and strategy for the Core Engineering organization
Relentlessly drive costs out of products to maximize margins
Aggressively work with China engineering organization to facilitate ability to take on more engineering projects (development and sustaining)
Evaluate products for “local for local” consumption and execute projects to match product material and content for local customer needs
Monitor and guide the activities of the product engineering teams
Meet performance and cost objectives for the engineering group
Function as part of the team prioritizing and resourcing projects (PAC process leadership)
Meet cost savings objectives through engineering changes
Drive the implementation of TEOA-E (lean processes for engineering)
Provide engineering expertise
Staff and resource the engineering groups and associated laboratories
Evaluation of current talent levels and upgrade as necessary to enable future growth needs
Requirements include proficiency in the following:
Electrical engineering related to signal transmission and shielding
Mechanical engineering related to design of electrical components
Product test in areas of mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical, and shop handling.
Evaluation of fundamental material properties
Six Sigma processes and tools
Project management tools
Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline, masters degree desirable.
Good organizational skills and good interpersonal skills.
Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills are required.
Demonstrated success managing development or sustaining engineering group
Ability to lead and develop others
Willingness and ability to advance career
International travel required
