Smart Growth America is hiring for a Communications Fellow to contribute to our website, online networks, and press outreach efforts. This is an opportunity that features a great deal of responsibility, direct collaboration with our supporters, and valuable hands-on experience.
The ideal Communications Fellow is an excellent writer, is tapped into news about politics and smart growth development, and can turn that information into engaging content for our website, email lists and social media. All Fellows should be excellent team players who can perform regular duties while also offering new ideas for how to make our work even better.
The Communications Fellow's primary responsibilities include:
Aggregating news about smart growth issues;
Posting our daily news clips;
Maintaining Smart Growth America's social media presence;
Tracking social media and web analytics and aggressively promote our work in Twitter and other social media platforms;
Writing original content for our blog to tell compelling stories about smart growth;
Formatting and sending HTML emails;
Assisting with outreach to reporters and bloggers; and
Providing communications support for our coalition partners.
The Fellowship position requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates should have a strong interest in smart growth, economic development, transportation, community growth or related areas.
In addition, the Communications Fellow should have a basic understanding of HTML; proficiency using content management systems; solid understanding of organizational social media protocol; and interest contributing to the communications strategy. Knowledge of Photoshop or CSS are a definite plus.
Candidates should have at least a bachelor's degree and all candidates should be highly computer literate with experience in web content, and the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Timeframe and Location
The position is full-time, 40 hours a week. Minimum commitment of six months required. Potential to extend fellowship to 12 months is available. All Fellowships are located in Washington, DC. The Fellowship begins in January.
