The Mechanical Design Engineer will support the activities of the Engineering department by providing design engineering in both product design and project execution, leading mechanical engineering tasks on new product designs and/or changes to an existing product, supporting Engineering by assisting in project meetings, and help define job specifications for current active projects with a strong emphasis the Trek Product Development Process. Learn, develop, implement, and utilize tools that allow for lead-time reductions in Trek’s product development process.
Responsibilities
Plans, conducts, and leads mechanical engineering research, design and development projects related to consumer electronics from initial concept through final production.
Benchmarks current and competitive products using qualitative and quantitative methods.
Designs parts to meet project parameters and manufacturability requirements.
Selects materials and manufacturing methods.
Designs prototypes together with internal and external prototype facilities.
Evaluates designs using DFMEA tools, computer analysis, lab testing, and field testing.
Uses Trek best practices to complete engineering documentation.
Uses root cause analysis to troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues.
Works closely with purchasing, product management, project management, electrical engineering, industrial design, purchasing, manufacturing engineering, and vendors to complete designs.
Communicates with product managers and marketing regarding features and functions of new projects.
Performs non-routine engineering, research and development assignments of some complexity and variety involving calculations and complex tests.
Works with Trek legal department pertaining with patents and related issues for new and existing product.
Travels as necessary both domestically and internationally.
Requirements
BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent
3+ years’ experience in engineering design
Must have engineering experience with small scale part design and injection molding enclosures (compression molding and aluminum forging/casting experience are a plus).
Electronics enclosure design, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and vibration.
Experience with FEA tools and thermal simulations.
Proficient solid modeling abilities using SolidWorks.
Attitude that fosters positive thinking, flexibility, and continuous improvement.
Effective verbal and written communication skills - able to interact with internal/external contacts around the world.
Excellent planning and organization skills, initiative, accountability, detail oriented, and able to balance multiple projects.
Able to use judgment and independent thinking in the resolution of issues and in the interpretation of data.
Effective use of Microsoft Office products, able to quickly learn internal Trek software systems as necessary.
Experience with hands on prototyping (mill, lathe, silicon molding, basic hand tools).
Basic understanding of part costing is a plus.
