DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The North Carolina Zoological Park is among the State’s top visitor attractions. The Zoo is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic, experienced candidate to lead its marketing and public relations programs and to work closely with the fund-raising and development team. This position is primarily responsible for developing and managing a marketing plan designed to maximize visitor attendance and revenues, to heighten positive awareness of the Zoo at state, regional, national and international levels and to position the Zoo as one of the premiere travel destinations in the Southeast U.S. The marketing plan and budget will encompass advertising, media relations, special events, promotions with commercial partners, travel, industry and group sales, publications, graphics, website design, market research, and sponsorship. This position will be responsible for managing up to ten staff to include Performance Management Work Plan development and reviews, performance improvement plans and career development plans.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
Candidates must have well-proven skills and a thorough knowledge of up-to-date principles and practices in marketing and public relations as related to a large, complex, publicly oriented facility.
They must have strong organizational skills to develop marketing programs and to manage staff in the areas of advertising, media relations, special events, promotions and partnerships with a wide range of individuals and organizations.
Candidates should preferably have experience in the development and execution of fund-raising programs, in helping to build a strong, long-term donor support base and in engaging with donors, where appropriate, on a person-to-person basis.
They must have strong negotiating skills and an ability to work in a complex, multi-disciplinary team showing a high level of respect and understanding of many different points of view.
The candidate must have highly effective communication skills, both written and spoken.
They must have an outgoing personality with exceptional interpersonal skills and sound judgment to handle staff, media, corporations, government officials and agencies, visitors, customers, donors, members and other key audiences, especially under pressure.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Journalism or English and four years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutes.
