The person in this position will serve as a member of the Editorial Quality group – the staff responsible for ensuring that thought leadership articles published by S&P Ratings Services are the most insightful, forward looking, and best-written in our industry. This person may also, from time to time, write original articles, based on the research of Standard & Poor’s credit analysts, that will anticipate, reveal, or explain key trends that affect major companies, industries, or markets from a credit perspective. At their best, the articles this person edits or writes will precede – and thus inform – the reporting of mass business media on these same trends.
Edit thought leadership articles and special reports authored by S&P Ratings analysts to standards that are equal to or better than the highest standards in business journalism in terms of insight, sophistication, and execution (clear and concise, written in plain English [no jargon], devoid of the passive voice, and well organized). In doing so, either read directly behind the analytical author, or behind the editor who has done the first read on an article.
Help mentor/train other editors and analysts to be able to edit and write to the highest standards in business journalism (see above).
Edit at least 250/325/400 such articles per year depending on the level of the employee hired.
Anchor special reports (a collection of articles based on a common theme): Plan and coordinate the coverage and delivery schedule, plus first-edit the component articles.
Minimum of 5 - 7 years experience writing or editing articles on the equity markets, banks and other financial institutions, economic issues, and major corporations and industries for top-tier mass-market business publications.
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Journalism, English, or Business (advanced degree a plus).
Ability to write a complete range of material, from short news articles to 5,000-word research articles.
Experienced editor or reporter with demonstrated ability to gather information from primary sources and synthesize it into sophisticated analyses written in layman’s language (plain English).
Significant experience in real-time publishing preferred
Be able to develop a good working knowledge of the subjects covered by Standard & Poor’s Ratings Service analysts. Good working knowledge of S&P and its products a plus
Must be a self-starter, highly productive, and have the potential or demonstrated ability to produce finished edits of the work of others
Must be highly organized and detail-oriented yet able to quickly grasp and articulate the big picture, both strategically and in edited material
Have entrepreneurial mindset and experience required to propose and develop new, value-added editorial features of value to a paying audience.
