The Sergeant performs supervisory and general duty law enforcement work for the assigned department. Work involves supervising, assigning and briefing employees on daily work assignments and assisting them in handling difficult or unusual situations. Work also involves answering complaints, investigating disturbances, patrolling, and serving legal papers. Employee is also responsible for completing periodic reports and performing various personnel related functions such as scheduling work, granting time off, and conducting formal performance appraisals. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work.

Examples of Duties:
Supervises subordinate personnel and ensures adherence to department policies and procedures related to the specialized law enforcement work of the personnel aspects of the Denton County Sheriff’s Department.

Manages all personnel related aspects of the Sheriff's Department which includes recruiting, testing, and performing background inquiries on applicants, setting up review boards, and interfacing with department heads, applicants, and other employees.

Posts open positions and interviews candidates for the position; ensures compliance with TCLEOSE requirements concerning personnel related functions.

Oversees and ensures that the county is current on all TCLEOSE Licensing.

Interviews and investigates applicants as well as coordinates criminal polygraphs as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED required for this position.

Minimum four years of experience in a related field required; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Texas required. If assigned to County Jail, Certification as a Jailer in the State of Texas is required.

Possession of a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain State of Texas driver's license within 90 days.
