Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Informatics, the Research Environments Librarian will participate in University Libraries efforts to integrate the library, its services and resources, to Virginia Tech’s research enterprise. Virginia Tech University Libraries is looking for a service oriented, energetic, motivated individual with an entrepreneurial spirit to work in a team-based environment to advance its strategic directions, goals, and objectives. Assumes a leadership role in the Libraries’ efforts to “problem solve” with regard to VT researchers’ practices, processes, and technologies in digital research. Enables the library to support VT researchers’ needs as they relate to information/data/knowledge creation, sharing, publishing, and preservation. Designs ways for the library to become more integrated into knowledge production environments. Assists the Associate Dean for Research and Informatics with research community engagement activities, e-research and digital curation initiatives, and other information/data policy-related projects. Explores a deeper understanding of research and scholarly practices among researchers, of discipline-based cultures and of digital products created by single and transdisciplinary communities of knowledge. Ensures services, and resource, design and development are informed by this understanding.

Serves as a consultant to researchers on e-research issues, including: author/creator rights, options for providing the widest possible access to digital data, funder data and information policies, and emerging research and scholarly environment issues. Participates in sponsored research projects for e-research initiatives. Partners with others in the Libraries, campus units, and at other universities on e-research initiatives that support researcher needs in evolving research and scholarly environments. Leads and participates in the development of e-research training programs. Maintains current awareness in the library profession and related fields. Serves actively on appropriate Departmental, Library, University and professional committees. Provides quality services in a professional manner with demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence and diversity and inclusion. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Required: MLIS from an ALA -accredited program or equivalent advanced degree. Experience managing digital projects. Experience with DSpace, Fedora, or other repository software. Knowledge of metadata for digital curation. Familiarity with scholarly communication, information/data management policy issues, and semantic web technologies. Knowledge of trends in higher education. Excellent communication and project management skills; ability to set priorities and make deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred: Background in computer science or experience with computational methods and techniques. Supervisory experience. Experience leading teams. Experience with digital curation services. Experience with grantsmanship, including proposal development and grants administration. Record of professional involvement.
