La Crosse County Zoning, Planning, and Land Information Department seeks person to perform technical work relating to land use.

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm. This is a 37.5 hour work week.

Essential Job Functions:
Please see job description on our website for full list of duties and qualifications. Draws zoning petition and Board of Adjustment maps under supervision. Assigns parcel address to the 9-1-1 numbering system. Reads, understands and interprets zoning ordinances and comprehensive land use plans. Travels to sites to meet with landowners, potential buyers, general contractors, etc., to answer questions and advise regarding land use issues. Issues and indexes zoning/occupancy permits, under supervision. Under supervision, assists in the administration of the Farmland Preservation Program. Makes inspections and refers citations for zoning violations, under supervision. Waits on counter, answers phones, and assists the public with land information questions. Attends public hearings and assists in record keeping. Assists in preparation of documents required for public hearings held by the department’s governing committees. Enters data on spreadsheets, types correspondence, types e-mails and tracks items in MS Outlook Calendar.

Training, Experience and Other Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school.
  • Training in Civil Engineering mathematics or Land Use Planning & Management.
  • Two years related experience in interpreting land descriptions, drafting maps, and civil engineering drawings.
  • Substantial experience with Geographic Information Systems, especially ESRI ArcView software.
  • Preference for experience or training with soils and hydrology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Strong computer skills using the following Microsoft products: Outlook e-mail, Outlook Calendar, Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver's license and access to personal transportation, or other reliable means of transportation for county-wide travel in all types of weather.
  • May consider other relevant combinations of training and experience.

Employees are eligible for career progression to this level after having worked one year (or equivalent number of hours) at Step 3 of Land Use Specialist, Entry. Employee moves to Step 3 of Advanced.
