This is a temporary position available starting December 10, 2012 through January 4, 2013. This position will serve as editor’s assistant to the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Physiology, Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology. Duties include electronic receipt and organization of approximately 800 papers per year, interaction with 7 Associate Editors at distant sites; oversight, tracking and expediting manuscript assignments for timely peer review and assisting EIC with decision letters. Other duties include resolving issues with the online submission/review system, organization of conference calls with Associate Editors and communication with managing editors of the journal. Will be responsible for maintaining the Editor’s schedule, managing literature databases, arranging travel, creating and editing presentations and documents (e.g. official letters, nominations) and office organization. Successful applicant will be flexible and able to calmly and efficiently work under deadline pressure.
Some weekend and evening work may be required.
Education and Experience
Qualifications must include a background in communication and/or science and outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills. A B.A. or B.S. in a relevant discipline would be appropriate. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree who are interested in pursuing a career in science writing/editing are welcome to apply. Applicant must have proficiency with Mac and PC, MS Word and PowerPoint, and Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat.
