This position is part time, non-exempt, unclassified and not covered under the Allen County Employee Handbook.
Days and times vary; up to 30 hrs/wk.
Under the direction of the Operations Coordinator, the Shift Supervisor provides for the safety of all staff, offenders, and visitors in and around the facility by monitoring the facility and grounds. The Shift Supervisor enforces local, state and federal laws by implementing effective policy to protect the lives and property of the people.
Acts as a first responder to any threat or danger to staff, offenders, visitors, or the facility. Inspects all persons entering the facility for suspicious behavior or activity and responds immediately to a threat of danger.
Conducts searches of all offenders and visitors passing through the security check through the use of metal detectors, x-ray machines, hand wands and hands on searches. Ensuring no weapons, contraband, or other illegal substances or items enters the facility.
Enforces all rules and regulations of the facility and program as it relates to offender / staff safety. Enforces rules governing offender conduct and distributes sanctions as warranted.
Oversees offender’s performance of responsibilities including proper personal hygiene, common and personal living areas are clean, and designated work assignments are completed.
Monitors offenders activities and behaviors, ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations, and report all unusual and/or unruly activity to appropriate department staff officer.
Provides offenders with daily meals and issues prescribed medications according to standing physicians orders.
Inspects facility and grounds on a regular and random basis, ensures security of the facility, monitors the general health and welfare condition of offenders, ensures the cleanliness and security of the facility, grounds and living areas, and ensures offender compliance to facility and program rules.
Performs the duties of a Community Service Supervisor, Security Officer and or a Transportation Officer as needed and performs the duties assigned to each respective position.
Transports offenders when scheduled for court appearances, medical appointments or medical conditions, and any other approved allowable activity as assigned.
Answers telephone and greets visitors, determines nature of call, responds to inquiries regarding offenders of the facility and/or routes caller to appropriate person or department.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Specialized training through a program of less than 18 months duration or equivalent work experience and at least one (1) year of relevant work experience.
Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong report writing abilities.
Skilled in defensive tactics.
Ability to use a variety of law enforcement equipment including but not limited to hand held radios, portable breath test machine, metal detectors and video surveillance equipment.
Ability to work with high risk offenders and a variety of law enforcement personnel.
Must have valid driver's license to operate County vehicle.
The Shift Supervisor very frequently sits with occasional walking and standing. Some lifting of up to 20 pounds, bending, pushing/pulling loads, reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders is required. Attention to details is very frequently required with frequent typing, monitoring of equipment, and detailed inspection and some proofreading.
