School/Unit Faculty of Arts and Sciences Sub-Unit ------------ Location USA - MA - Cambridge Job Function Faculty & Student Services Time Status Full-time Department Freshman Dean's Office Salary Grade 057 Union 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary Duties & Responsibilities Harvard College is a residential college comprising four areas of the freshman Yard and 12 upperclass Houses. Residency is required in the first year. After the first year, 97 percent of students live on campus. Each House and area of the Yard employs a Resident Dean, who serves as the dean of students under the direction of the Dean of Harvard College. The Resident Dean is responsible for the academic progress and the personal welfare of the undergraduate students in the House or Yard area (approximately 400-550 students); representing students at the Administrative Board; working with departments on academic issues affecting individual students; and, like the House Masters and Dean of Freshmen, providing friendly support through meals, House and Yard activities, office hours, and casual contact.

The Resident Dean’s primary responsibility is fostering the academic progress and personal welfare of the undergraduates in one Harvard House or Yard. Given the nature of the Residential College System, the Resident Dean works closely with House Masters/Dean of Freshmen, the Secretary of the Administrative Board, House/Yard Staff, and the Advising Programs Office. The Resident Dean is a member of the Administrative Board of Harvard College, which meets weekly during term time to consider undergraduate petitions for exceptions to College rules, as well as unsatisfactory academic records and matters of College discipline. The Resident Dean plays a critical role in both individual and community crisis management and in House or Yard disciplinary incidents.

Resident Deans of Freshmen are full-time administrative appointments. In addition to advising students, Resident Deans of Freshmen are responsible for matching roommates and completing housing assignments for all first-year students assigned to their area of the Freshman Yard. Resident Deans also participate in the recruitment and training of 60 resident proctors and oversee the work of approximately 20 proctors throughout the academic year. The Resident Dean of Freshmen is appointed by the Dean of Harvard College and reports to the Dean of Freshmen. Basic Qualifications Master's degree required. Additional Qualifications Requirements: Ability to advise and counsel undergraduate students about academic opportunities and support resources, interest and experience in academic administration and student life, and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a Ph.D. in an area of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, have taught undergraduates, and have worked in a residential environment with holistic advising responsibilities. Applicants should also be familiar with residential crisis management and College disciplinary responsibilities. Successful candidates in the past have brought a variety of life and work experiences to the position.
