The Associate Director of Media and Public Relations assists in the formulation, implementation and administration of all press strategy for The Mount Sinai Medical Center, which includes the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. This individual effectively leads efforts in the translation and communication of institutional and leadership news surrounding the institution. This includes: new departments, programs, initiatives, recruits, as well as business relationships and affiliations, and new models of care. The Associate Director takes the lead in crisis communication to protect and enhance the reputation of the institution. In addition, this individual assists the Director in coordinating coverage of basic science, clinical and education news, along with news surrounding Mount Sinai physicians, programs, services and affiliations. Proactively places stories with print, online and media outlets. This position reports to the Director of Media and Public Relations.

1. Builds and maintains relationships with key press and internal constituents, and assists in the management of press relations during major events and crises.

2. Translates and communicates basic science, clinical and educational news through the writing and production of communications materials such as press releases and media advisories.

3. Addresses press inquiries, and proactively pitches stories that differentiate Mount Sinai from its competitors, identifying the institution as a world-class medical center,

4. Creates media plans and proactively pitches to leadership throughout the year based on key institutional or news events.

5. Proactively pitches MSMC as an institution committed to genetics, genomics and personalized/precision medicine in order to position as a pioneer in more precise, patient-centered care and innovator in medical education.

6. Proactively meets with and develops relationships with journalists at key healthcare and philanthropic organizations including Modern Healthcare and Chronicle of Philanthropy.

7. Tracks Mount Sinai leadership and institutional hits, as well as media coverage of competing institutions.

8. Creates and carries out production of yearly media clip book, highlighting media stores on MSMC leadership in the School and Hospital.

9. Updates and maintains a thorough list of journalists who cover institutional and leadership affairs.

10. Performs effective crisis communication to protect and enhance the role of MSSM.

11. Acts as Primary Media Office contact for MSSM Thought Leadership Campaign, aimed at increasing leadership visibility nationally and internationally.

12. Collaborates with Thought Leadership team at MSSM by phone, in person and throughout length of project scope.

13. Writes talking points and background notes for leadership. Performs and transcribes interviews with leadership to be used in Op Ed and other news publications.

14. Handles special projects with strategic media partners. Creates new partnerships with external associations and trade groups.

15. Works with Media Director to differentiate and position individual departments, physicians, programs and services to elevate their reputation among key constituencies and consumer markets, locally, nationally and globally.

16. Acts as Media Director when appropriate.

17. Manages the coordination of press conferences and institutional media events.

18. Attends departmental meetings within the institution and offers creative ideas for enhancing coverage via print publications, web, television and radio.

19. Works with the Web Managing Editor to produce and update content for the digital Newsroom.

20. Edits and prepares daily and weekly media reports, and prepares metrics to highlight the results of the Office's media outreach.

Job Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required; Masters preferred

7 + years of academic medical center, hospital, corporate public relations, or agency experience; superior writing skills and the ability to effectively translate complex health care information for the general public.

Excellent computer skills, including ability to navigate the internet Well versed in social media, including Twitter and other digital platforms Microsoft Office suite: Word and Outlook - intermediate Excel and PowerPoint - advanced, Superior writing skills; the ability to effectively translate complex healthcare information for the general public. Ability to supervise staff Understanding of medical terminology and demonstrates competency in communicating effectively with clinical staff and hospital personnel is required.
