Veterinary Research Technologist - West Lafayette - Biomedical Engineering

Assist with all phases of laboratory animal research and testing. Responsibilities include: using traditional laboratory species as well as farm species and performing anesthesia induction, maintenance, monitoring, and aftercare. Administer medications (IV, IM, SQ, PO). Perform minor surgical procedures, including vascular access. Collect physiologic data and interpret to optimize management of animals under anesthesia. Assist with radiologic and surgical procedures. Cleaning and maintenance of surgical area. Perform daily observations and treatments of research animals. Stocking and cleaning of work areas. Maintain animal and study records.

Required:
Associate degree in Life Sciences or from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program
Two years experience in research animal care/surgical care
Ability to perform health evaluations on animals prior to procedures and throughout studies, including collection of samples and providing treatment based on interpretation of test results
Strong organizational skills with ability to manage a project and be able to carry out the plan while following approved protocols
Ability to collect and interpret physiologic data to optimize management of animals under anesthesia
Must be able to establish priorities and reevaluate and adjust work schedule according to shifting needs
Ability to work with a variety of people and a willingness to learn new procedures
Good communication skills with ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to read/write English
Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally

Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program
Registered Veterinary Technician or AAALAS certification
Handling, nursing and anesthesia experience with laboratory and farm animal species
Familiarity with various surgical procedures in swine and sheep
Working knowledge of regulatory compliance issues in animal research
