The Utilities Department is currently recruiting for a Utility Installer Repairer Assistant that is dependable and focused on team success . Under the guidance of an Installer/Repairer-Lead, or an Installer/Repairer, you will assist s in the installation, repair and maintenance of the water, gas and wastewater system facilities of the City of Palo Alto . The successful candidate will be part of a 1 0 member team that will rotate between Gas Operations, Water Operations and Wastewater Operations within the Utilities Operations Division . Upon successful completion of the training and passing an in-house test, promotion to a Utility Installer Repairer will be available.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Drive service vehicles -- dump trucks – pick-ups and Safety is never compromised 2. Repairs Water/Gas leaks using clamps or removing and replacing damage section of pipe 3. Replace/Repair sewer mains, laterals, cleanout, mains and manholes 4.Chemically treats mains/laterals for root control and sets out poison for rodent control 5. Taps into existing water mains for installation of new water mains, fire hydrants, fire services, valves, and domestic water services 6. Must require and maintain a D1 certification for promoting into next level position
Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver's permit with appropriate endorsements required within sixty days of appointment with the ability to obtain license within six months of appointment.
Good verbal, written skills and computer knowledge Ability to follow instructions both verbally and written Ability to pass drug test mandated by Department of Transportation Must have a California class C with the ability to posse a valid California Class B commercial driver’s permit with appropriate endorsements required within sixty days with the ability to obtain license within six months of appointment. General Computer skills --- Microsoft word, Excel, Access Must be available to work nights/weekends and overtime from time to time Two to Three years of experience in outside Construction of installing/repairing Water, Gas, or wastewater utilities. One to Two years of experience in plumbing Work Environment: Position typically requires, climbing, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, communicating, hearing, and typing on a computer, read utility maps. May work at heights and work in inclement weather conditions Travel from work site to work site with exposure to dust and noise Ability to work in stressful situations OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Drive dump truck to work sites; willingness to work in different locations throughout the City; travel locally to work sites; attend meetings during work hours; work with dangerous substances such as: natural gas, work around electricity, and asbestos; wear safety gear and breathing apparatus. Must be able to be certified in polyethylene fusing techniques.
