The Upward Bound Assistant Director reports to the Director of Upward Bound/Talent Search at Virginia Tech and is responsible for supervising the implementation of conditions outlined in the Upward Bound federal grant, assessing the personal and educational needs of the program participants, assisting with program implementation and providing direct services to students. General Program Duties are: - Supervise the planning and coordination, implementation, and evaluation of educational, career, social, and cultural programs for students and parents. - Plan, supervise, and evaluate the residential component of the summer component. - Assist with design and implementation of program budget. - In consultation with the program director, responsible for day-to-day fiscal transactions. - Coordinate program specific staff meetings. - Coordinate the parent advisory board. - Supervise the maintenance of participant records. - Assist with coordination of tracking of former participants. - Assist with preparation of annual performance report for the U.S. Department of Education, as well as other periodically requested reports. - Assist with the selection, training, and evaluation of program staff. - Assist with tutorials and other assigned activities. This position will require occasional weekend work and requires travel in a 10-county area of Southwest Virginia.
Master's degree in education, counseling, student development, social work or related field; academic advising experience and/or other relevant experience in areas such as career planning, educational planning, or counseling or equivalent education and experience; excellent organizational and analytical skills; and excellent communication skills.
Experience working with TRIO programs or educationally and economically disadvantaged students; prior experience in a higher education setting; supervisory experience.
