DUTIES:
As a Medical Support Assistant in the Health Benefits Unit, the incumbent has the primary responsibility for interviewing patients applying for medical benefits.
Applications may be received in person, by telephone, by mail, on-line or referral from another VA.
The incumbent is responsible for entering demographic, insurance, and income information into the VistA system.
This information serves as a base for determining entitlement to medical care as well as bill preparation and collections on all billable episodes of inpatient and outpatient care.
Accurately generates patient data cards for veterans applying for care using the Veterans Identification Card (VIC) system.
The incumbent also performs duties in the Beneficiary Travel Program for the health care center including, but not limited to, arrange all modes of transportation via air ambulance, commercial air, taxi, ambulance, bus and/or independent transports; make special arrangements per physician documentation according to travelers medical condition and/or preference with a high priority emphasis on SCI (spinal cord injury), TBI (traumatic brain injury), etc.; communicates and interacts with patients in a manner which is appropriate to cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient.

U.S. citizenship.
Education.
Have four (4) years of education above high school.
English Language Proficiency.
MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

ERMINATIONS:
Specialized Experience for GS-6 Level.
One year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level including, but not limited to, scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patients appointments and/or consults; preparing for clinic visits; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage.
