QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma required. BA in Psychology or Sociology preferred.
Licensure/
Certification: Listed as a Nursing Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Facilities Services within six (6) months of employment preferred. Completes and passes hospital skill and screening tests.
Experience: Two years of college or one year relevant experience preferred;
Relevant experience/medical terminology/computer literacy preferred.

External Job Description:
BASIC PURPOSE:
Provides patient care to psychiatric patients as directed by a Registered Nurse and according to the plan established by the treatment team. Participates in department and team treatment programs via educational groups and 1:1 interactions. This position serves pediatric and age categories.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Provides patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
A. Collaborates with Registered Nurse to plan and initiate appropriate interventions consistent with policies and procedures.
B. Collects and communicates psychosocial data about health status of patient/family in a systematic and continuous manner. Includes patient and family in this process.
C. Observes and reports symptoms, behaviors, and changes in patient’s condition in a timely manner.
D. Initiates one-to-one interactions with patients according to the milieu program.
E. Maintains patient rights in accordance with North Carolina’s Patients Bill of Rights.
2. Participates in department treatment program
A. Serves as an adult role model for all patients and peers.
B. Assists with milieu management of department.
C. Facilitates patient educational groups.
D. Demonstrates competencies of the preceptor/resource role.
E. Formulates recommendations to improve individual performance.
F. Completes self-evaluation yearly.
G. Facilitates constructive feedback regarding own performance.
H. Actively participates in department/hospital committee/task force.
I. Participates in on-going revision and development of department policies, procedures, guidelines, and program groups to maintain/improve quality.

6. Performs clerical and receptionist activities.
A. Maintains, prepares and transcribes the medical record.
B. Maintains efficient flow of clerical work on the unit.
C. Assist in maintaining unit inventory of supplies, equipment and instruments.
7. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills which promotes a positive
intra- and interdepartmental atmosphere.
A. Reports to oncoming shift NS or MHT
B. Reports patient status, patient/family concerns or unsafe conditions, as occur.
C. Responds to call lights/intercom/telephones.
D. Directs questions and problems to appropriate person, recognizing the need to seek assistance when necessary.
E. Provides assistance/support to patients and significant others

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Therapeutic communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of facilitating groups and therapeutic milieu.
  • Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Bend and/or stoop frequently.
  • Lift thirty pounds or more four or more times per hour.
  • Sufficiently mobile to push stretchers, wheelchairs, carts, and equipment.
  • Communicate via telephone and other automation vehicles.
  • Visualize computer screens, medical records forms, and equipment screens.
  • NTI competencies appropriate to age groups.
  • Lift and position patient of all weights and heights.
  • Hearing blood pressures, IV alarms, call bells, monitor alarms, etc.
  • Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and nonverbal communication from patients in diverse states of development, i.e., adults and geriatrics.
  • Physical job demands may be subject to possible modifications to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
