Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for humanely operating and maintaining the City's kennels; work toward the goal of increased placement of adoptable animals; ensure quality of work and adherence to established policies and procedures; perform or assist in the performance of euthanasia procedures; perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in science, biology or a related field plus four (4) years experience in the operation of a public kennel to include one (1) year direct supervisory or technical lead experience in an administrative capacity. Related education and experience may be interchangeable on a year for year basis. Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
This is a safety sensitive position and requires a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and random drug/alcohol testing. Position requires: Background check, Pre-employment physical, Odd days off.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Operations, services and activities of a public kennel

A variety of animal species, breeds and related behavioral and health characteristics

Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation

Modern and complex principles and practices of humane animal care, treatment and euthanasia

Methods and techniques used in the security and control of Class II and III controlled substances

Operational characteristics of kennel equipment and tools

Principles of quality customer service

Modern office procedures, methods and equipment, including computers

Occupational hazards and standard kennel safety practices

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations

Supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff

Select, supervise, train, discipline, coach and evaluate staff

Independently perform the most difficult animal care tasks in a humane, compassionate manner

Interpret, explain and enforce kennel policies and procedures

Operate a variety of animal control equipment in a humane, safe and effective manner

Perform humane animal euthanasia

Interact with the public promptly and effectively

Respond appropriately to emergency situations and conditions

Efficiently and effectively prepare clear and concise reports

Communicate clearly and concisely

Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Work weekends, nights and holidays
