Design Editor WD
WD Editorial & Art
The Design Editor plans, designs and constructs projects of high appeal to WOOD magazine readers. This position serves as a technical consultant to various editors. In addition, the Design Editor provides construction notes for projects as necessary.
Essential Job Functions
50% - Creates original projects for WOOD magazine. Oversees the creation of working drawings for the project builder or other craftsmen to use in construction of the projects for photography. Provides roughs for how-to illustrations needed for projects. Oversees the delivery of all material needed by the how-to project writer.
25% - Builds projects and provides notes on construction.
15% - Serves as technical consultant for WOOD magazine. Assists in developing technically accurate shop-tested technique articles for WOOD magazine.
5% - Helps prepare the editorial plan for the projects presented in WOOD magazine. Ensures that projects are appropriate from the standpoint of reader interest, skill, taste, cost, and range of complexity.
5% - Supervises and approves work of freelance technical illustrators, and project builders to ensure work is delivered in a timely fashion.
All must be met to be considered.
Bachelor's degree in field relating to woodworking design/building or equivalent training and/or experience.
Minimum three years experience in cabinetmaking, finish carpentry, contracting, drafting, or design work.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of woodworking procedures, woodworking design, drafting, finish carpentry, and computer assisted design software.
Ability to design woodworking projects, make working drawings, and interpret the designs to craftsmen who will build them. Must be creative, idea-oriented person with ability to work with craftsmen, illustrators and other designers and editors to ensure that appropriate projects for readers are presented in the best possible way.
Must be computer literate and able to work with project design software.
