About the Department

The mission of the Environmental Services Department (ESD) is to work with our community to conserve natural resources and safeguard the environment for future generations. The department provides services for wastewater management, garbage and recycling, drinking and recycled water, and watershed protection.

ESD is comprised of a staff of more than 450, boasting a diverse set of skills and specialties among our team's treatment plant operators, administrative professionals, biologists, chemists, engineers, inspectors, environmental program specialists, accountants, trades personnel, and more. The department and its personnel demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork, environmental protection, and building good partnerships.

Position and Duties

The City of San José Environmental Services Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill flexibly staffed Plant Operator vacancies at the San José/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant. Plant Operators work in an industrial environment where they operate various types of process equipment that removes hazardous and harmful pollution from wastewater coming from households, businesses and industries. Plant Operators inspect, operate and maintain equipment in process areas, take samples for process control and read, interpret gauges, dials and other process instruments to make necessary process and equipment adjustments. They ensure that the final product, which is clean water, meets federal and state environmental and safety regulatory standards before the water flows back to the San Francisco Bay . Plant Operators staff the Plant 24/7 and are assigned to one of two 12-hour operating shifts. Applicants for this position must be available to work nights, weekend and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:

Plant Operator I

- Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent and one (1) year performing duties of a wastewater treatment plant operator.

- Licensing: Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Operator Grade I Certificate AND possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California .

Plant Operator II

- Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent & two (2) years performing duties of a wastewater treatment plant operator.

- Licensing: Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Operator Grade II Certificate AND possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California .

Plant Operator III

- Education & Experience: Two years college including 15 semester units of basic science courses AND two (2) years performing duties of a wastewater plant operator with demonstrated knowledge and experience in at least two (2) specific operational process areas OR graduation from high school or equivalent AND four (4) years performing duties of a wastewater plant operator with demonstrated knowledge and experience in at least two (2) specific operational process areas.

- Licensing: Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Operator Grade III Certificate AND possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California .
