Approximately 15-20 hours per week

This is a part-time position responsible for assisting school children in crossing major traffic thoroughfares in a designated school zone. Reports to the Programs Coordinator

Examples of Duties:

Assists children at street crossing zones. Directs children to crossing zones and insures traffic is stopped in order to allow children to cross the street.
Assists in maintaining a safe atmosphere for school children in and around school crossing zones. Administers basic first aid to injured pedestrians and instruct the children on safe conduct when crossing in a school zone.
Records and reports vehicles driving recklessly and at high rates of speed. High volume of direct public contact is performed in person. Communicates clearly and courteously to assist others.
Remains calm in situations assisting the general public. Job functions are performed Monday through Friday, but at times requires flexibility in work hours.

Typical Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED preferred. Job requires no previous training in this area. Periodic classes are given to enhance job knowledge and skills. Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.

Must have the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action. Must be able to deal with others firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect. Ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions. Must have knowledge of safety rules, which can be taught to young pedestrians. Must have knowledge of school procedures when dealing with uncooperative students. Ability to establish friendly relationships with youth and parents. Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations. Stands and uses both arms and hand to direct traffic for extended periods of time in various weather conditions Visually and audibly alert to detect traffic hazards for personal and public safety.
