Advertised Summary Job Description

Performs necessary functions to support verification of insurance benefits for anesthesia services provided by Columbia University faculty anesthesiologists. Verify patient eligibility with insurance companies from face sheets printed out of IDX after the surgical event. Access web sites or contact insurer by telephone to verify certificate number and confirm effective dates, policy holder, coordination of benefits, plan type, benefit detail, group number, billing address and prior authorization. Review Eagle registration or contact patients for missing demographic or insurance information needed for billing. Confirm if claim can be sent electronically and if any Dictionary 120 updates are needed. Update patient demographic and insurance information in IDX and add financial and general comments. Identify and tag any special billing category patients such as transplant, global, international, out of state (non NJ or NY) Medicaid and grant. Make financial class changes as necessary in compliance with IDX policies. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Manager.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

High school graduate or equivalent with minimum of three to five years prior related work experience in physician practice plan or hospital business office preferred or bachelor's degree with one year experience. Ability to operate electronic claims processing system. Must be knowledgeable regarding detailed claims preparation and payer specific billing requirements and reimbursement guidelines. Must have a good understanding of medical terminology and medical records coding, third party payer guidelines and reimbursement practices and available financial resources for payment of balances due. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Must be able to communicate with patients, payers, outside agencies, and the general public through face to face, telephone, and written correspondence. Must demonstrate ability to effectively problem solve and make independent decisions. Requires prior work experience on personal computer, electronic calculator and various general office equipment.
