GENERAL SUMMARY: Works under the very general direction of the Principal Investigator or Department Administrator, performs full scope of management responsibilities in a research laboratory, including fiscal/budget management, supervision of staff activities, inventory management, etc. Independently performs highly sophisticated experiments. Participates with the principal investigator in the design of experimental protocols. Interprets experimental results in conference with other researchers. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Supervises operation of the laboratory, including overseeing the use of laboratory funds, supply inventory and staff activities.2. Manages all lab personnel, including hiring, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, orientation and training.3. Develops budgets, analyzes trends, and produces reports, along with allocating shared costs throughout the lab’s funds. Additionally participates in all aspects of grant writing and proposals.4. Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab. Coordinates animal purchases and maintenance; insures compliance with access and use of animal facility; composes protocols.5. Supervises full time technical research assistants, sponsored staff. Timekeeper for weekly paid employees.6. Supervises transfer of reagents and animals between laboratory and outside institutions in compliance with relevant regulations and authorities. Assist in the acquisition of samples from BWH OR7. Reports on work in progress at weekly seminars and interprets experiment results in conference with other researchers.8. Carries out independent research projects which involve the execution of highly sophisticated techniques.9. Contributes to scientific literature and may present the results at hospital and outside meetings.10. Trains staff in specialized lab techniques.11. Radiation safety officer for the lab.12. All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: BS Required, MS preferred.Minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience required. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: • Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations.
• Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects.
• Must have aptitude for technical problem solving.
• Ability to effectively supervise others.
• Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab.
• Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research.
• Must possess aptitude for budget management.
• High level of computer literacy. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for supervising staff including hiring, firing, evaluating and disciplining. Will orient and train new staff members.
