Letter of Qualification
Performs laboratory analyses to support nematode research studies by planning, collecting/preparing, analyzing, for nematodes. Provides limited assistance to Idaho nematode survey activities by providing diagnostic services. Responds to questions and requests regarding nematode distribution in Idaho soils. Maintains the nematode laboratory computer system by updating the recent data available on the nematodes in Idaho. Develops more effective control tactics to minimize crop losses due to nematode infection. Trains/instructs IH, staff, and other personnel in proper laboratory procedures, safety, and operation of all laboratory instruments as well as the Leica microscope, centrifuge, and the other instruments. Initiates publications by using computer programs and spreadsheets, finalizing completed data from field observations and laboratory analyses, and generating reports as needed. Maintains production and quality control for the Nematode Diagnostic Laboratory by operating laboratory instruments and equipment, detecting malfunctions, and complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:
Requires an M.S. degree appropriate to the research discipline and/or a closely related field.
Must possess good interpersonal skills, demonstrated skills with computers, and effective communication skills.
Some positions may be required to work with toxic, volatile, and corrosive chemicals or carcinogenic substances, and/or required to work in adverse environmental conditions, and/or carry or lift heavy materials.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
M.S. in nematology or related field
Experience working in the field and within the laboratory
B.S. degree in nematology or related field with 15 years on the job experience
Experience nematode sampling, extraction and identification of nematodes
Knowledge of computers and software programs, good written and oral communication
Knowledge of supervisory practices
