DUTIES: SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Receives oral and/or written instructions from supervisor. Instructions and assignments are frequently provided on a project basis, such as planning a contour plowing project. Supervisor reviews work in progress and upon completion. Work is checked for compliance with established practices or specific instructions.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Incumbent operates a field-type tractor with attached and towed equipment. Plans the order in which work is to be accomplished; transports materials and equipment; and digs, loads, plants, clears, mows and dispenses liquid and solid materials. May operate under different or extreme conditions such as mud, snow, and areas where trees and shrubs present operational hazards or on uneven ground where skill and expertise are required for safe operation. Performs maintenance on field-type tractors and attached and towed equipment.

Makes multiple connections between the tractor and attached or towed equipment. Adjusts the equipment for job requirements such as setting the height of mower blades, depth of plow blades, and the rate of application of sprayer attachments.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Must have skill and knowledge in the operation of the tractor and manipulation of equipment controls while compensating for rough terrain features such as steep hills, ravines, holes, and ditches. Must have skill in operating slope mower tractors and attachments and steering tractor to compensate for degree of slope and stability of the ground. Must have the knowledge to perform operator maintenance on tractors and equipment.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Performs the duties according to supervisor's oral or written instructions. Incumbent is responsible for using his discretion on best method of accomplishing project assignments. Responsible for making frequent and difficult judgment calls on planning and completing projects; i.e., judging soil conditions, plow depth; assessing terrain requirements and stability of tractor and equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS:

Exerts significant physical effort while operating tractors and manipulating equipment controls to compensate for difficult terrain or other challenging conditions. Frequently requires continuing arm and leg movements to operate tractor and other equipment controls. Often lifts and handles heavy equipment attachments when connecting them to the tractor. Lifts equipment and materials up to 50 pounds. On occasion may be required to lift bags of fertilizer and seed weighing up to 100 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicant must have 1 year of related experience in operating tractors and associated equipment, and performing maintenance on equipment.
May be required to obtain a Government motor vehicle operator's permit. Must have and retain valid driver's license.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies: Ability to do the work of a Tractor Operator without more than normal supervision, Possesion of valid drivers license, Ability to operate tractors and equipment, Ability to maintain tractors and equipment and ability to interpret and follow instructions.

Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid experience or volunteer work.
