The Labor & Delivery Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will provide direct patient care to newborns/infants in Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital (VVWH), with goals of providing the highest quality patient and family centered care, facilitating communication among care providers, increasing educational opportunities for house staff and medical students, and innovating care of the newborn in the new Children's and Women' Hospital. |
Responsibilities - Clinical
The practitioner will complete detailed histories and physicals and present pertinent data to the medical staff.
Collect and interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
Order tests and prescribe medications.
Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor procedures.
Contribute to the education of new resident physicians and nurses from both the Well Newborn and NICU services.
Confer with attending physicians and communicate with other care providers/consultants to coordinate clinical care.
Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatment.
Streamline the patient transfer process from VVWH to NICU, including writing discharge orders and communicating specific patient needs to team members.
Attend high risk deliveries, lead neonatal resuscitation activities. Participate in quality assurance activities.
Perform other related duties as requested by the attending physician, and/or NICU medical director.
Utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.
Responsibilities - Deliveries
Attendance, resuscitation and stabilization of full term and late preterm newborn deliveries.
Supervision and education of House Officers in the delivery room and with newborn care.
Attendance, resuscitation, stabilization and transfer of care to the NICU resident service for any infants requiring intensive care. These deliveries will be concurrently attended to by the NICU house staff on call, and by a neonatology fellow, NNP or neonatologist.
Responsibilities - Procedures
Nurse Practitioners will maintain skills with the following common procedures, which they will perform or supervise:
Lumbar puncture, Umbilical catheterization, Endotracheal intubation, Arterial puncture
Intravenous catheter placement
Responsibilities - Consultations
Prenatal consult services for mothers who are taking high risk medications.
Prenatal counseling services for mothers whose babies who may require resuscitation, stabilization or admission to the Neonatal Hospitalist Service.
Consult services to other newborn care providers in the birthing center, including Family Practice Physicians, Private Pediatricians, and Well Newborn Rounding Physicians.
Responsibilities - Education
Facilitation of education of house staff through direct supervision.
NRP - assist in instruction of others
Clinical Service may include:
Well or minimally sick infants admitted for sepsis evaluations and treatment, the care of these patients may take place in the mother?s room or NEST.
Other infants requiring triage or a short stay in the NEST (e.g., TTNB, transitional hypoglycemia, poor feeding, observation after administration of naloxone or other maladaptation).
Pediatric First Responders on the Von Voigtlander Women?s Hospital unit
Provide Attendance, resuscitation, stabilization for emergent and urgent care needs for all newborns.
Improve parent satisfaction by providing additional nurse practitioner support to birth center newborns.

Current license to practice Nursing in the State of Michigan.
Graduation from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
A Master's degree in Nursing.
Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and ongoing maintenance of license.
Clinical experience in a Level II or Level III Nursery that includes delivery attendance.
Specialty Certification as a nurse practitioner by the State of Michigan.
A minimum of 1 year experience attending deliveries requiring newborn resuscitation and evaluation.
A minimum 1 year experience caring for acutely ill patients with diseases common in a Level II or Level III Nursery setting.
Self-directed, reliable, demonstrates initiative and motivation to work independently as evidenced by previous/current employment experience and demonstrated in annual evaluations.
Must reflect a professional appearance and demeanor and possess excellent customer service skills.
Demonstrated high level of critical thinking and ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment.

Work hours between 4 PM - 8 AM including weekends as needed; shift length to determined
