The Vice President of Nursing reports to the Sr. Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, is a member of the Executive Management Team and is responsible for assisting with planning, organization, directing and evaluating nursing practice and the overall operations and direction of critical care services, med/surg, and nursing administration departments. A key element of the role is the organized and efficient operations of the inpatient hospital areas on a daily basis and the development of processes to promote quality, safe care, promote employee, patient and physician satisfaction, budgetary compliance and identification of departmental direction. The VP is a steward of collaborative relationships between nursing, ancillary and support staff and physicians. A high level of independence/autonomy in areas such as program development, conflict resolution, patient satisfaction and employee team facilitation is essential.

Typical Duties

· Responsible for the administrative management and integration of all departments and programs within Critical Care Services, Medical Surgical Division of Patient Care Services, including Nursing administration.

· Collaborates with CNO and other Vice Presidents to define purpose, goals, and objectives for nursing services including input into the development of a nursing strategic plan which sets the vision for care delivery systems; establishes standards of care and standards of nursing practice.

· Promotes creativity and innovation for patient safety and service program development and program improvement/enhancements in coordination with the leadership team. Develops, leads, supports and actively participates in efforts to improve patient quality, safety and service.

· Serves as Mentor and Role Model for all members of JPS Health Network leadership team. Establishes internal and external communication network.

· Assures that an effective quality improvement/performance improvement program is operational throughout the patient service departments and coordinates with the medical staff.

· Ensures compliance with standards and regulations of TJC and other licensure regulating and accrediting agencies.

· Monitors standards of patient care, nursing practice and employee performance for consistency with policies and procedures, current nursing research and compliance with performance improvement plans.

· Collaborates with CNO and other nursing leaders in the development and adherence to the plan for provision of patient care.

· Represents nursing services by attending hospital board meetings and medical executive committee.

· Promotes creativity and innovation for patient safety and service program development and program improvement/enhancements in coordination with the leadership team. Develops, leads, supports and actively participates in efforts to improve patient quality, safety and service.

Qualifications:

· A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is required.

· A Master’s degree in nursing, healthcare administration, business administration or related field obtained through curriculum that included courses in administration or management.

· Five-Ten years of progressive nursing leadership experience in an acute hospital setting is required, and previous senior level nursing experience is strongly preferred. Experience in a public hospital and a teaching hospital are preferred.

· Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Texas is required.
