Site Director

Reports to: Director of Children & Family Services

Department: Children & Family Services

Location: Oakland

Travel: Local travel including home visits, fieldtrips, and training opportunities

Benefits: Medical and Dental benefits on the first of the month following 90 days employment, two weeks vacation each year for the first five years.

Program Summary

The Children and Family Services programs include Head Start, Early Head Start, State Pre-Kindergarten, Home Based Services, and Developmental Play Groups. Over 900 children birth through kindergarten entry and 32 expectant parents and their families receive child development and comprehensive family services through the Unity Council in Oakland.

The Unity Council is a non-profit community development corporation committed to helping families and individuals build wealth and assets through comprehensive programs of sustainable economic, social and neighborhood development in Oakland and the EastBay. The Unity Council and its affiliates employ more than 250 culturally and ethnically diverse people in a variety of program lines, ranging from early childhood education to jobs placement to low-income senior housing.


Day-to-day operations of the center, including assisting in budget planning;

Supervision of teaching and administrative staff;

Ensure program contract compliance and reporting;

Curriculum development and lesson planning supervision;

Assist with assessment of children;

Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment for center;

Oversee all parent communications;

Attend meetings and trainings when necessary;

Participation in staff training and parent activities;

Perform additional duties as assigned by management.


Bachelors' Degree in Child Development from a regionally accredited school accompanied with at least 3-4 years experience in a similar role, or a Site Supervisor's Permit + 5 years experience;

Supervision units (Administration 3 Units);

Experience in supervision;

Ability to model play-based, child-centered curriculum;

Familiarity with administrative procedures (prior Head Start experience preferred);

Ability to coordinate, schedule, motivate a team & work well with a management team;

Caring, compassionate approach to working with children and families;

Ability to work harmoniously in a multi-cultural team;

Bilingual Spanish/English preferred as needed;

Awareness of safe lifting techniques for lifting children, supplies and furnishing and commitment to suing preventive health measures in the classroom to prevent the spread of disease.
