The Executive Director leads and directs the operations of The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation in a manner consistent with the organizations charter, bylaws, and policies; established objectives; applicable federal and state laws and regulations; and within established fiscal parameters.
Serving as the chief staff executive for the Foundation, the Executive Director is responsible for its strategic leadership. This senior administrator also establishes organizational objectives and priorities; monitors attainment of goals and objectives; and oversees the organization and coordination of fundraising activities and board management.
The Executive Director reports to the Vice President for University Advancement and is a member of the Vice President's leadership team.
The Executive Director has oversight of personnel along with management responsibilities for the Chief Financial Officer and the Associate Director for Advancement Services.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Provides vision and leadership to carry out the organization's mission. Maintains staff and volunteer focus on the Foundations mission and balances organizational priorities through strategic planning and implementation of the plan, enforcement of organizational policies and procedures, and other tasks required to maintain effective operations of a professional office environment.
Plans and completes tasks and initiatives as determined by the USM Foundation Executive Committee and Board of Directors as well as by the President and Vice President for Advancement of The University of Southern Mississippi. Assists and coordinates activities, meetings, and reports associated with the Board of Directors of the Foundation, the administration of the University, and others as it relates to the committees of the Foundation. Ensures the productive work of the executive, investment, finance, nominating, and bylaws committees as they promote the growth and continued development of the Foundation.
Guides and integrates the work of the three divisions of the Foundation, including Development, Financial Services, and Advancement Services. Leads efforts to align business processes and reinforce organizational structure to ensure effective operations in all areas of the staff. Is responsible for the overall management of the Foundation and works with a senior leadership team including the Chief Financial Officer (Associate Director for Finance), Associate Director for Advancement Services, and Assistant Director for Fundraising Initiatives and Planned Giving to provide accountability and long-term stability in the operations of the organization.
Leads staff and volunteers in developing and implementing strategies to ensure successful fundraising. Oversees the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of corporate and individual major gift prospects through the Development staff. Coordinates the hiring process for Development Officers and oversees these employees' job orientation, training and ongoing management. Oversees the management of the Foundations communications plan through the Manager of Communications and the donor relations and campaign events and programs plan through the Manager of Donor Relations and Special Events.
Performs any and all duties and responsibilities associated with the Foundation as assigned by the Vice President for Advancement.
A bachelor's degree is required with a master's degree preferred. Two years professional experience in managing a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation or in a higher education fundraising role with management responsibility is required. Must be willing to work select weekends and evenings.

Chartered in 1959, The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that serves as a fiduciary of private funds donated to The University of Southern Mississippi. Supported by a 25-member staff, the Foundation is led by a volunteer Board of Directors that works with the University to serve the institutions mission by raising private funds.
In the 2012 fiscal year, the Foundation set a new record for gifts and pledges received during a single fiscal year at $20,336,110. The record represents an increase of 46 percent over the previous record. More than 4,620 donors participated in the record-setting effort.
During the recently concluded fiscal year, University officials, USM Foundation staff members and volunteers raised significant funds for a wide variety of projects, including three of The University's top fundraising initiatives: the Building Better Business Campaign, the College of Nursing Building Campaign, and the DuBard School 50th Anniversary Campaign. Gifts to the Foundation also helped establish 30 new endowments, award scholarships to more than 1,800 students, and increase University employee giving to Southern Miss from 10 percent to 32 percent.
Significant gifts during the 2011-12 fiscal year included $6 million to support a new building for the College of Business, $4 million for construction of a new residence hall, and $4 million to launch the College of Nursings campaign for a new, state-of-the-art facility.
