SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a multipurpose laboratory for astrophysics, photon science, accelerator and particle physics research, has a summer employment opportunity available for a student/recent graduate who is interested in software development and seeking to gain work experience.

The Accelerator Directorate Instrumentation & Control Software department is dedicated to providing software applications and device control support to the subsystems of accelerators and experimental facilities. Under the supervision of senior control systems physicists and engineers, this position will assist the Instrumentation & Controls Division in efforts related to the device control and software applications.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assist with the development, upgrade and maintenance of software for the control and data acquisition subsystems of accelerators and other experimental facilities.
  • Assist the senior engineer in all, or a portion of, the project life cycle including systems analysis and design, system implementation and integration, test and documentation, user interface, as well as ongoing software maintenance.
  • Communicate and work effectively with other staff to determine project requirements and appropriate implementation.
  • Provide support with the development of requirements, architecture and design specification documentation as needed. Present and communicate effectively with users, team members and management.
Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible summer student position. for up to 12 weeks duration.Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization.

Qualifications:
Required:
• Recent graduate or currently enrolled in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, and have completed at least two years of study.
• Experience with programming language such as Java, C, or C++.
• Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to multi-task and complete assignments.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative work environment.
• Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Skills:
• Experience with Linux and scripting language such as python.
• Experience with the EPICS toolkit.
