Performs repairs and maintenance to plumbing, carpentry, heating, and air conditioning systems in accordance with accepted practices and procedures; performs routine maintenance and janitorial duties; ensures work is in compliance with safety requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of methods and materials used in commercial building cleaning and minor repair.
Knowledge of the construction trades such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
Knowledge of the methods and materials used in maintaining and repairing light and heavy duty cooling and heating systems and related components.
Ability to read and use tester meter to measure electric current.
Ability to determine supplies and materials needed before beginning and maintenance or repair project.
Ability to perform maintenance and repair work in compliance with accepted practices and procedures and in an efficient and timely manner.
Ability to perform duties without supervision.
Ability to perform work in productive and safe manner.
Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed inside and outside a stockroom, warehouse, or office and exposed to a variety of weather conditions such as: excessive dampness/chill, heat, humidity, intermittent noise, cold and inclement weather, and dry atmosphere. Work is exposed to unknown & dangerous conditions/unusual environmental stress, life-threatening situations, solvents, dirt, grease, oils, silica, asbestos, dust, constant noise, vibration, fumes, smoke, gases, radiant/electrical energy, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Capable of working closely with others or alone, working long or irregular working hours, doing shift work and/or working on weekends, working with protective devices, working below ground, on ladders or scaffolding, working around moving objects or vehicles, working with hands in water, working around machines with moving parts and objects, and traveling by car, van, bus, or plane. Ability to operate motor vehicles, office equipment and mechanical equipment, light to heavy lifting from under 24 pounds up to 45 pounds and over, light to heavy carrying under 15 pounds up to 45 pounds and over, straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, repeated bending, crouching, crawling, standing, sitting, twisting, kneeling, pushing, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, and reaching above shoulders. Ability to see, write, read, count, identify shade of color, perceive depth, and hearing is needed to perform the essential functions of this job.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Checks and repairs air conditioning, refrigerators, and cooling equipment including window units and domestic/ commercial central units, exhaust fans and automation controls, and other related equipment to system.
Checks, repairs, and installs electrical and gas boilers used in hot water central heating systems; utilizes electrical equipment and hand tools.
Repairs and installs plumbing equipment; repairs water lines; unclogs drain lines, electrical valve sensors and other related plumbing components.
Changes burned out lights and performs electrical repair and maintenance; repairs and replaces electrical motors, installs new wiring, conduct pipes, breaker panels, transformers, and control wiring.
Decides amount of materials needed to perform repair and maintenance work on new projects.
Performs carpentry repairs (i.e. installs doors, replaces doors, and window frames, etc.).
Performs other maintenance work that will be above ground level in height of over 100 feet (i.e. control tower, light beckons, cameras, light fixtures, etc).
Performs trouble-shooting and repairs electrical equipment and/or related components.
Performs maintenance to mechanical equipment, such as doors, conveyors, and other related mechanical equipment.
Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors, and other business contacts.
Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
At least five (5) years of work experience performing plumbing, painting, electrical, heating and air conditioning repair, and maintenance work.
Valid Licenses and Certifications:
Journeyman Electrician License is preferred.
Valid Texas Drivers License*
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
- If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
