The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) is looking for full-time and part-time permanent Economist position(s) to support the Volpe National Transportation Systems Centers Economic Analysis Division or other divisions within the Volpe Center. OST-R coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) research, training and data analysis programs and is charged with advancing rigorous analysis and fostering the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation's transportation system. The Volpe Center, part of DOT/OST-R, in Cambridge, MA, has been helping the transportation community navigate the most challenging problems for over 40 years. Volpes mission is to improve transportation by anticipating and addressing emerging issues and advancing technical, operational, and institutional innovations across all modes. This position is located in the Kendall Square area in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Volpe Center's Economic Analysis Division is seeking talented, entry-level, intermediate-level and journey-level economists to fill several full-time and part-time positions who are interested in joining our consulting team to support our clients in the development and use of decision support tools, and in the analysis of policy and program options for transportation systems. In this role, you will support senior staff conducting analyses of national and urban transportation policies, and play a key role in the development of benefit cost models, regulatory assessments, performance metrics, strategic plans, and market analysis.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who has demonstrated an ability to apply economic analysis skills to address significant policy, regulatory, technological change or organizational performance issues. The candidate should have experience with applied economics techniques, such as benefit cost analysis and econometrics, and be able to communicate recommendations persuasively. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams both within his/her organization and crossing organizational boundaries. At the GS-9 and 11 levels, experience or interest in transportation is a plus. For the GS-12 level, the ideal candidate will have knowledge of transportation.

These are great opportunities for new, intermediate or journey-level professionals with strong quantitative background in economic data analysis who enjoy working in an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment. In anticipation of being considered for an interview, you will be asked to submit writing samples. Transcripts are required.

DUTIES:

As the Economist , you will:

• Participate on project teams by gathering and analyzing data using a variety of specified analytical techniques including literature reviews.

• Conduct economic research, analyzes and interprets economic data, develops estimates of benefits and reports the results of findings under the guidance of a senior Economist.

• Conduct surveys to obtain economic data, relates previously submitted data to current conditions, and determines the relations of pertinent economic factors for well-defined projects.

• Participate in planning and scheduling activities with program manager's guidance; executes tasks as planned; monitors progress, resolves basic problems and keeps program manager informed of project status.

• Communicate and presents economic concepts and quantitative data, orally and in writing, especially to non-technical audiences and works collaboratively with other economists and with senior level executives.
