Universities Space Research Association (USRA) is inviting applications as a part of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) program.

SOFIA is a premier observatory for infrared and submillimeter astronomy. The SOFIA 747-SP aircraft carries a 2.5-meter telescope designed to make sensitive infrared measurements on a variety of astronomical objects. SOFIA is a joint project between NASA and German Aerospace Center, DLR. USRA operates the SOFIA Science Center at NASAs Ames Research Center for NASA. The aircraft observatory is based at NASAs Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base. The SOFIA science center offers an exciting research environment and close proximity to astrophysics, planetary science, and astrobiology groups at NASA Ames and the SETI Institute.

USRA is seeking an IT Managers role is to ensure the streamlined operation of the Information Technology (IT) Team in alignment with the business objectives of the organization. This individual will plan, coordinate, direct, and design IT-related activities of the organization, including providing inputs for the budget for these activities, as well as provide administrative direction and support for daily operational activities of the IT Team. The IT Manager will work closely with decision makers in other SOFIA Teams to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the organization. This person will also define and implement IT policies, procedures, and best practices.

The IT Manager is responsible for overall operation and performance of data availability, integrity, and confidentiality and security of, the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure of the SOFIA Science Project. This includes critical applications and systems such as the off-Center SOFIA Science Network (SOFIA.USRA.EDU), the Data Cycle System (archive for observatory data), the Observatory Data Cache (system for temporary data storage), the System Integration Labs (simulation environments for software and operations development), the Data Pipeline (science data processing infrastructure), and the Flight Manager Infrastructure (flight planning system). This role is responsible for managing and administering internal networks and connections to the Internet. The IT Manager communicates with the appropriate NASA I/T organizations for external interface requirements/issues. The IT Manager communicates with and reports security incidents to NASA Ames Research Center IT Security organization and USRA IT Functional Management organization. The IT manager operates and maintains the SOFIA Science network, servers, and workstations.

Responsible for maintaining project schedules used by functional managers to measure, forecast and track project related work. This position is responsible for scheduling aspects of the project baseline. This position works closely with project management to define detailed measurement and scheduling criteria.

This position is based at NASA AMES Research Center Moffett Field, CA; some travel is required

  • A bachelors degree in computer science or related field
  • A minimum of 10 years relevant experience in IT management
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
  • Strong technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems, including Linux, Mac
  • OS X, and Windows

  • Strong technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards, including
  • Cisco and HP switches

  • Extensive application development support experience, including Subversion version
  • control system, Eclipse, Apache, Tomcat, and Microsoft Visual Studio

  • Proven experience in IT infrastructure planning and development
  • Experience managing a distributed software development environment
  • Practical experience with digital video and multimedia production;
  • Experience with common desktop publishing software.
  • Experience managing staff thru an enterprise-grade trouble-ticket tracking system
  • Ability to travel
