Under immediate direction, register, interview, screen and select potential donors; perform sample and whole blood collections; provide donor care and conduct equipment quality control while delivering excellent customer service and adhering to company standards.

Donor Techs reporting to Community Blood Drive Operations (CBDO) will load, unload and set up equipment at collection site, may drive Bonfils vans, shuttles or buses, and must be able to travel to blood drives in all areas of Colorado. Donor Tech-Flex may report to a variety of locations in the metro area. Donor Techs, regardless of report location, may mentor new Community Donor Operations employees. Employee may drive for company business and must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license, personal automobile liability insurance as applicable, as well as meet Bonfils’ internal driving policies and insurability guidelines.

Position Responsibilities:

1. Greets, registers, screens and performs vital signs on prospective donors/patients.

1.1. Greets donors/patients when presenting to the collection site.

1.2. Registers donors and instructs donor on completion of the Blood Donation Record (BDR).

1.3. Accurately interviews, screens, ensures donor confidentiality, and records donor "Medical History" including thorough examination of the BDR.

1.4. Accurately performs, evaluates and records hematocrit/hemoglobin test, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.

1.5. Inspects and records donor arms for injections marks.

1.6. Approves/defers and records donor eligibility and consults with Team Lead, Supervisor and/or Technical Support Staff when Operating Procedure (OP) does not specifically address eligibility.

1.7. Ensures donor confidentiality.

2. Performs all aspects of phlebotomy and whole blood and sample collection procedures.

2.1. Greets donors/patients and verifies that donor and Blood Donation Record correspond at phlebotomy station.

2.2. Performs and records venipuncture and collection of whole blood (allogeneic, directed, autologous and therapeutic) and test samples.

2.3. Performs, ensures and verifies correct labeling of Blood Donation Record, sample tubes, and collection sets with Donor Identification numbers (DIN).

2.4. Solves "Special Situations" that occur during procedures.

2.5. Dresses donation site and informs donor of post donation instructions.

3. Record documentation on Blood Donation Record and other forms.

3.1. Documentation is detailed, thorough, complete and accurate.

3.2. Written documentation is legible.

3.3. Documentation demonstrates professionalism and an awareness of potential liability.

4. Recognizes and implements appropriate intervention for donor reactions.

4.1. Evaluates impending reactions and implements interventions to prevent such.

4.2. Provides and records intervention.

4.3. Informs donor of post-reaction care.

5. Implements quality control on equipment.

5.1. Performs and records equipment quality control.

5.2. Implements corrective action, notifies supervisor and records when equipment is out of compliance.

5.3. Reviews equipment Quality Control records as assigned.

6. Ensures proper handling of blood products for storage and transport.

6.1. Inspects DINs on collection set, record(s), and sample tubes for accuracy and completeness.

6.2. Heat seals tubing of collection sets.

6.3. Stores, packs and transports product collections and sample tubes.

7. Through organization’s customer care goals, promote donor retention.

7.1. Provides service that exceeds customer’s expectation.

7.2. Treats donor cordially, courteously and with respect when answering questions and handling difficult situations.

7.3. Thanks and encourages each donor to donate again.

8. CBDO employees assist team members in setting up community blood drive sites .

8.1. Inspects equipment for drive to verify sufficiency of supply and quality.

8.2. Loads and unloads vans.

8.3. Sets up and dismantles equipment.

8.4. Uses proper body mechanics when lifting and moving heavy objects.


High School diploma or equivalent required

Related education and experience preferred: Licensed Practical Nurse, Paramedic, Medical Licensed Technician, or degree in health sciences


Entry level, previous position as a phlebotomist preferred

May drive company vehicle, valid Colorado driver’s license and insurability

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Attention to detail

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred

Entry level, previous position as a phlebotomist preferred

Previous experience with customer service preferred

Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers

Must be able to achieve and maintain current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification

Must be able to perform donor care and intervention

Ability to read, write and speak fluent English

Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly


This position is a "float" position and required the candidate to work 40-hours per week as follows: Sunday through Saturday, 4 or 5 days on with two rotating days off that will change weekly. Must be available to work between the hours of 6 am and 9 pm.

The position pays $13.09 per hour - possibly more dependent upon experience - and comes with full benefits. An additional $2 per hour is paid for the extreme flexible nature of the job.
