This is a Position-Based Test conducted in accordance with Civil Service Rule 111A.
Under direction, the IS Engineer, Journey - Linux will plan design, implement, integrate, maintain and troubleshoot the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) enterprise network. Will serve as systems integrator for Active Directory, servers, storage and messaging; analyze, troubleshoot and resolve system or network problems; implement and exercise discretion in applying established policies and procedures.
Essential functions: The IS Engineer, Journey - Linux will be responsible for planning, designing, implementing, documenting and maintaining SFPUC's enterprise network infrastructure; installing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, documenting, and troubleshooting hardware; installing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, documenting and troubleshooting software; monitoring and maintaining the network's integrity and reliability; writing, testing and implementing Perl programs for process automation; preparing, testing and packaging software for automated distribution; coordinating software distribution and changes with IT staff; planning, implementing and documenting network backup and recovery procedures; troubleshooting, researching and solving complex network and desktop problems; applying fixes/patches to software; coordinating fixes and patches for the entire network; monitoring network resource usage (e.g. disk space usage, CPU utilization). developing resource usage trend reports for management to develop short-term and long-term resource management strategies; developing and implementing proactive network maintenance process and procedures; providing technical guidance and assistance to other IS Engineers and IS Administrators; working with vendors, consultants, contractors, and IT personnel from other City Bureaus, Divisions, and Departments; providing telephone and on-site software and hardware technical support for end users at all SFPUC sites; providing courteous customer service. Performs related duties as assigned.
1. Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferably in computer science, management information systems, or a closely related field; AND
2. Four (4) years recent experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Enterprise Networks/Active Directory, of which must include:
All qualifying experience must have been gained within the last five (5) years.
- Four (4) years of Linux system administration
- Three (3) years of Red Hat Linux administration
- Two (2) years experience writing, monitoring, and maintaining PERL programming
Substitution : Additional qualifying work experience as described in Minimum Qualification #2 above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
The stated desirable qualification may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process
when candidates are referred for hiring.
Very strong experience in troubleshooting all aspects of the RedHat Linux operating environments.
Strong Experience in performance tuning, networking, system security, IO monitoring and analysis.
Knowledge and understanding of implementing a disaster recovery plan
A solid understanding of virtualization technologies such as VMware ESX
Experience with storage administration with NetApp filers
Strong written, oral and listening skills.
Strong communications and problem solving skills.
Ability to interact with customers over the telephone and in-person in a pleasant, professional, and courteous manner.
