The Mental Health Service (MHS) Medical Director will be a key participant in the leadership team within MHS, with direct accountability for delivery of psychiatric services within the Medical Center and all affiliated community clinics. The incumbent will perform general psychiatric assessment and treatment in a multi-disciplinary setting composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, physician extenders and a variety of rehabilitation/recovery therapists. The incumbent will work closely with his/her colleagues to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art mental health care. As many of these patients suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, experience and competence in treating this condition is desirable. The incumbent shall work under the direction of the Chief of MHS. Routine work is performed with a minimum of supervision. Employee will be required to perform duties on his/her own initiative. As the MHS Medical Director, the incumbent will operate in a manner promoting success in all applicable performance measures and ensuring compliance with all applicable accreditation standards. The employee shall act in a thoroughly professional manner at all times. He/she shall work in harmony with other members of the professional and technical staff; tact and courtesy are mandatory when interacting with patients and staff. The MHS Medical Director will be involved with supporting, promoting, and enhancing the Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship programs at the VAMC.
Supervisory Duties: Incumbent has direct administrative and professional supervision of the following Psychiatric providers and MHS physician extenders:
(1) Director of Mental Health Outpatient Clinic, who is the direct supervisor for all MH Outpatient Clinic
(2) Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
(3) Emergency Department
(4) Compensation & Pension Staff
(5) Physician Assistants, where applicable.
(6) Other staff as assigned.
The position includes opportunities for research and a potential for academic appointment at the University of Tennessee
- - Memphis College of Medicine, consistent with experience. The VA is affiliated with the University of Tennessee, one of the largest academic health centers in the U.S.
Work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am- 4:30pm. On call may be required after 4:30pm and on weekends and holidays.
English language proficiency
Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
- Licensure and Registration
- - Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA Educational requirements.
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required. First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed OR Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
