Job Description:
In the acute care setting at the University of Florida, Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, the PA performs consults by acquiring history and data from patients and enters into standardized clinical note format. Performs physical assessments as indicated by patient status orders and interprets and evaluates laboratory results. PA will facilitate coordination of patient care services by collaborating with members of healthcare team to assure appropriate transfers to the next level of care. As a member of the medical staff, the incumbent will serve as the single point-of-contact for the patients, health care team members, alternate level of care sites, third party payers, and others as the patient’s care is planned and administered with the goal of providing the highest quality of care and the best utilization of resources. Incumbent will provide clinical management including patient/family education to achieve desired patient outcomes. PA will provide consultation direction, and education related to assigned patient population to health care providers. Responsible for identifying the patient’s alterations in health; assessing the patient’s response to treatment protocols; communicating appropriate data to staff; implementing interventions based upon established treatment protocols; and anticipating potential outcomes for patients at risk for complication. Must demonstrate ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs and provide care according to protocols and within the field of practice. Letters to referring physicians will be dictated by the Physicians Assistant, but read and signed by the attending physicians. The Physicians Assistant will write notes in patients’ files for the attending physicians to sign.

Performs history and physicals for patients, both pre and post discharge. PA will provide patient education in conjunction with this, setting appropriate expectations for hospitalization, discharge and follow-up care. Participates in assessment, initiation of preoperative testing and collation of preoperative data to facilitate evaluation of patients prior Orthopaedic procedures. Participates in the management of inpatient post-surgical care under the direction of the designated attending physicians. Provides post-surgical follow-up, including telephone response to patient questions, follow-up on discharge orders and appointments. Provides leadership for the development of a patient support group.

In the clinic, uses sound clinical judgment to answer queries from various sources regarding medical management of patient in collaboration with the physician, including telephone screening and triaging. Initiates and performs patient family education. Facilities consultation and referrals to the service. Update admitting physician regarding patient medical status and MD follow-up.

Serves as a role model and consultant to staff in the provision of patient care for the patient. Provides education to residents and staff as needed.

The incumbent will be expected to handle a variety of Orthopaedic surgical topics routinely; in particular, the sponsoring service care for Orthopaedic Adult Joint & Reconstructive patients acute and chronic.

Performs miscellaneous duties as requested to assure the timely completion of tasks necessary for the efficient operation of the Department of Orthopaedics

Minimum Requirements:
Must meet certification requirements as outlined in Chapter 458, Florida Statutes.

Preferred Qualifications:
This position requires PA from an accredited program. Three to Five years recent clinical experience applicable. Licensed as a PA in the State of Florida.

Ability to provide direct patient care, and treatment

Knowledge of clinical practice guidelines

Knowledge of payer protocols

Ability to organize and coordinate work assignments to establish and maintain effective work relationships with others

Knowledge of the range of treatments necessary to meet the age specific population served
