This position is located at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, IA. This position requires knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of laboratory animal science in order to maintain major oversight responsibility for the husbandry and well being of all animals used experimentally. Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
communicates constructively with research investigators and staff about problems and care of animals;
provides necessary care to all the animals used in Research and Development Service;
prepares diets and follows required feeding instructions provided by the investigators;
in the event of illness among the animals, traces the usual sources of the illness, isolating and calling it to the attention of the supervisor;
administers necessary medications to animals as prescribed by the investigator;
administers anesthesia as prescribed;
orders and maintains an inventory of daily supplies such as feed, bedding, cleaning material, etc.;
washes cages, performs housekeeping duties, cleans instruments, and performs autoclaving;
performs maintenance and cleaning of non-animal holding rooms; and
monitors equipment for proper functioning.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (Some weekend work may be required).

GS-07 EXPERIENCE: Must possess at least one full (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the Animal Health Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal Service. Qualifying experience may include work as an animal welfare inspector or as an assistant to a veterinarian who work with small animals. Examples of Specialized Experience include: maintains federal/state/agency standards and policies for animal care; prepares diets and follows required feeding instructions; administers medications to animals including anesthesia; traces and isolates the usual sources of illness among animals; and maintains an animal facility performing duties such as washing cages, cleaning and autoclaving instruments and monitors equipment for proper functioning. (A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position, salary/grade level, and the number of hours a week spent in such employment). GS-07 EDUCATION: Must possess a successful completion of one full year of graduate level education directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR
GS-07 COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Must possess equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and graduate education as described above to meet the total experience requirements for the Medical Technician position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist is preferred.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:
Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group.
