Summary of Duties
Ensures the delivery of quality nursing care for
medical/surgical patients in accordance with age-related
and individual needs, physician’s orders, hospital
policy, standards of care and nursing practice.
Responsible for assessing the needs of patients,
planning nursing care to meet those needs, and ensuring
that the plan of care is carried out and documented
according to the principles defined in the nursing
process. Ensures continuity of care by providing direct
care as well as supervising care given by nurses and
supportive staff (when appropriate). Participates in the
development of the medical/surgical unit goals. &am p;nb

HIRING COMPETENCIES - skills & experiences the applicant
should bring to the job.
a) License: Current licensure as registered nurse by the
Oregon State Board of Nursing required.
b) Certification: American Heart Association Healthcare
Provider BLS preferred upon hire, and required within 90
days of hire if not ACLS certified. If not American
Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certified upon
hire, must have current BLS certification through
another provider. ACLS within 6 months of hire.
c) Minimum one year Med/Surg experience preferred
(exception would be of a satisfactory preceptor program
and unit skills checklist completed within probationary
d) Demonstrates skills in caring for the neonate,
infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric
e) Skills in use of hospital computer
f) Demonstrates IV competencies within 90 days.
g) Uses effective written and verbal communication
h) Practices effective interpersonal skills.

j) Utilizes a problem solving process to make decisions
related to patient care and unit activity.

2. Physically Demanding Tasks:
Moves beds, stretchers and equipment up to 500
pounds five to ten times per shift. Assists in the
movement of patients and/or equipment whose weight
may range from 30 to 500 pounds, pushes or pulls
weights, walks and/or stands for 5-8 hours/shift,
lifts 35-40 pounds. Must have adequate range of
motion to accomplish duties.
