INTERPRETER – HEARING IMPAIRED
Interprets the spoken words of instructors to deaf and hard-of-hearing students and/or parents; to interpret audio learning devices; to interpret other sound forms of communication in the learning environment; to translate audio stimuli into sign language understandable to the deaf; and to perform related work as required.
Work is performed independently requiring some measure of initiative under the guidance of the teacher/case manager directly responsible for the implementation of the Individualized Education Program for the deaf/hearing-impaired student. The Site Administrator will at least annually evaluate the Interpreter’s performance.
Sign and use sign language in interpretation of spoken communication.
Attend classes with an assigned deaf student or small group of deaf students; interpret a wide range of audio stimuli including class lectures, classroom discussions, inter-pupil conversations, counseling and transactions on the school campus.
Supervise students during provisions of services; may assist students in their regular classroom.
Ensure safety of students under supervision.
Effective management of students under supervision including the enforcement of school rules and district policies and issuance of citations where required.
Assist students in resolving conflicts.
Create and maintain up-to-date records on students; may also administer and score standardized tests and assist with progress study reporting.
Assist with clerical duties related to the deaf student’s classroom environment such as photocopying, laminating, and other related duties.
May assist with lesson planning and preparation.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Contact with staff and students. Some contact with parents and the general public.
CONDITIONS OF WORK
Light physical activity in a normal classroom environment.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Completion of formal or informal training in signing for the deaf; knowledge of Signed Exact English and/or American Sign Language depending on the sign language that is used by the deaf students. Some knowledge of the educational environment is desirable. High school graduation or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position.
