Overview:
The Database Services Manager is responsible for managing database professionals charged with delivering standard/custom, supportable database technology solutions based on architectural standards that the Database Services Manager will help to define with internal team members and business partners.

The Database Services Manager will manage the Macys.com Operations DBA team to deliver and support new and existing database systems, guide the team in implementing best practices in database administration and introduce innovation with automation for existing and new tier-2 (i.e. non-external customer facing) databases used to support Macys.com business.

This position will work closely with both technical resources inside and outside of their own team and directly with Development managers and other system stakeholders to ensure that: systems function within defined SLA, outages are addressed rapidly and efficiently, upgrades and enhancements are non-disruptive and appropriate future planning is performed and acted upon.

Macys.com is an extremely fast paced, high-energy environment and the manager will need to be very flexible and adaptable in their approach to problems, requests and relationship management. This position will work closely with the Operations team, business and technical staff to support the design of databases, data warehouses and database services.

Key Accountabilities:
Responsible for providing day-to-day support and maintenance for Macys.Com Tier 2 databases.

Must be able to direct Oracle and DB2 administrators as well as provide guidance on other DB’s such as MySQL and Postgress.

Improve enterprise quality and availability of database engineered infrastructure components.

Continue to simplify, review, deploy and further improve: Automation of alerting, monitoring, maintenance, backup/recover and business continuity/disaster recovery process.

Accountable for proper backup and disaster recovery procedures.

Work with development teams to plan and promote changes to production.

Be the focal point among Enterprise Architecture, Application Development and Operations in IT on system inter-operability issues.

Closely partner with Corporate IT organization to leverage existing tools, processes and licenses.

Perform ongoing capacity management forecasts including timing and budget considerations.

Coordinate root cause analysis (RCA) efforts to minimize future system issues.

Work with other leaders to create, measure, and report progress towards established key performance metrics

Mentor, develop and train junior staff members as needed.

Skills Summary:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field or equivalent work experience.

6+ year’s leading technology professionals, including recruiting, performance reviews and career development planning.

5+ year’s experience developing and managing vendor relationships.

8+ year’s experience supporting mission critical relational databases with exceptional troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.

8+ year’s experience and knowledge with database services and “best practices” including DB security procedures.

5+ years demonstrating knowledge of distributed database concepts including design and replication set up.

5+ years demonstrating knowledge of Backup, Recovery and High Availability expertise including HACMP / HADR / Split Mirroring / Log Shipping / or similar solutions.

5+ year’s experience with DB installation, performance monitoring, tuning procedures and version control in enterprise 24 x 7 environment.

5+ year’s experience executing SQL reviews and demonstrating the ability to rewrite complex queries for performance improvement.

Must have excellent learning abilities and have the ability to use various resources to research issues.

Excellent oral/written communication skills.

Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends in support of deployments and resolution of production issues.
