  • DC charter school site We ’re presently developing and testing a new kind of after-school learning experience – physical computing - for two small classes at a progressive language immersion DC charter school. We ’re looking for an exceptional teaching assistant - a creator, designer, tinkerer, or artist - who supports awesome learning experiences for young makers. Your ingredients: laptops, Scratch, microcontrollers and a wide range of electronics and art materials. The results: young people who create simple, whimsical, working physical interfaces for games and other software they design in Scratch.
Levels Taught: 4th and 5th grades (M, W); 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades (T, Th) Class size: minimum 5, maximum 15 Instructional Team: You will work with a lead instructor, who is responsible for creating and leading your classroom program. You will plan, instruct, and assess your progress together. On site, you report to the lead instructor and after-school program manager. Additional school staff are availble on-site as needed.

FutureMakers provides all ongoing training, materials, technology, technical support and troubleshooting. Class Schedule: 3:30 – 5:30 PM M – Th. Class operates from 3:45 to 4:50. Scheduled prep / setup / breakdown time is included in these hours.

All supplies are stored on site – no requirement to transport any materials. We do not operate on school holidays or weekends. Position Type: Part time, leading to full time (June – August). Perfect for students or individuals who are seeking supplemental income.

You will be hired as an employee, not a contractor. Compensation: $17 - $20 / hr, depending on experience. Position Term: Contract - based on workshop schedule. Current program is scheduled to repeat mid-March, and additional classes are anticipated – extending the day by one hour.

About our project: FutureMakers is a new hands-on mobile makerspace for grade and middle school students in the counties surrounding Baltimore and Washington, D.C. We ignite curiosity and build skills among young makers - hands-on problem solvers who tinker, build and thoughtfully play - using traditional hand tools and cutting-edge technology. Developed by a maker and a team of special educators, FutureMakers bridges the applied learning gap in elementary and middle schools in Maryland. We believe kids make things better.

Website: The FutureMakers! Candidate requirements: • 1+ years of in-classroom instructional experience, education students encouraged to apply. This is not a child care position. • Experience with Scratch programming language, arduino, MaKey MaKey - a huge plus.
