Structural Engineers will provide structural engineering expertise to various organizations within Electric Boat. This expertise covers many areas including structural analysis of both internal and external structures, shock qualification of components by analysis, analysis methodology development, and maintenance of structural engineering software, and structural technology development. Candidates are also needed to support research and development in computational structural acoustics. Analyses are performed using state-of-the-art computer models that run on an extensive network of workstations and super computers. Knowledge of finite element analysis, steel design techniques, and advanced mechanics of materials are highly desirable for these positions. Additional duties for analysis positions include preparation of technical reports and presentations, and interfacing with design, testing and fabrication departments.

D463 - Solid Mechanics - Engineers will provide full structural engineering expertise to the submarine design organizations within Electric Boat. This expertise covers many areas including structural analysis, analysis methodology development, development and maintenance of structural engineering software, and structural technology development. Candidates are also needed to support research and development in computational structural acoustics. Analyses are performed using state-of-the-art computer models that run on an extensive network of work stations and super computers. Knowledge of finite element analysis, steel design techniques and advanced mechanics of materials is highly desired for these positions. Additional duties for analysis positions include preparation of technical reports and presentations, and interfacing with design, testing and fabrication departments.

D493 and 494. - Structures - Engineers are responsible for the detail design and analysis of submarine hull structures and structures both internal and external to the pressure hull. Responsibilities include structural engineering analysis of equipment foundations, platform decks, modular structures, joiner-work, bulkheads, pressure hull frames and shells, forward and stern main ballast tank structures, hull and deck penetrations, external fairings and control surfaces as well as interface control for external attachment of submersible vehicles. Analysis for shock loadings (static and dynamic) submergence, fatigue, hydrodynamic flow loads and tank pressurization loads are performed using state-of-the-art computer models as well as conventional hand calculation methods. Engineering design reviews follow the design development from concept formulation through detailed models to design disclosure in a Design-Build environment as well as construction support during the build phase. Additionally, Engineers will interface with designers and participate in Navy design reviews.

D496 - Naval Architecture - Naval Architects are responsible for determining the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics of submarines. This includes determination of tank volumes, ship displacement, stability, speed, power and maneuvering characteristics using traditional and computerized methods. The work also includes determining external flow characteristics for hull and appendages, hydrodynamic loading, and trade-off studies of various hull appendage combinations. Responsibilities also include waterfront support activities such as blocking, docking, submarine launching and barge transportation of major hull sections. Naval Architects provide leadership in concept development of new and innovative submarine platforms and leadership to the design/build teams that resolve design and construction issues for new designs and modifications to current submarines.

A Bachelor of Science degree in civil (structural), mechanical, naval architecture, ocean, marine or aeronautical engineering is required. A Masters degree in these areas is highly desirable.

Four plus years of related engineering experience preferred.

The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Candidate must be highly motivated, perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment. Demonstrable skills and proficiency in the technical areas noted is required.
