Bringing an extensive knowledge of assessment and educational research in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines, the Assessment and Educational Research Scientist will guide CEISMC's efforts to deeply understand, assess, and improve research-based learning.
  • Ph.D. degree in Psychology, Science, Education, or a related field, AND three (3) years of progressive professional responsibility in assessment or curriculum development.
  • Doctoral or relevant research work should emphasize psychometric methods, educational statistics, and/or educational quantitative methodology rather than focus on a specific discipline.
  • Specialized skills in the areas of psychometric methods (e.g., item response theory, classical test theory, and scaling), statistics, instrument development, and data analysis.
  • In particular, the position requires experience conducting research on the impact of project-based learning and experiential learning on student outcomes.

Required qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and the use of Item Response Theory (IRT) in assessment development.
  • Experience developing instruments such as tests, assessments, and questionnaires.
  • Experience writing/developing multiple-choice and constructed-response items that assess national and state-specific science and mathematic content standards at K-12 level.
  • Experience assessing K-12 interventions.
  • Extensive knowledge of modern developments, trends, and theories in educational research, assessment, and evaluation, particularly in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of educational research, program evaluation, course assessment, curriculum development, and strategic planning.
  • Extensive knowledge of Human Subjects in Research protocols and Responsible Conduct of Research principles.
  • Superior writing, critical assessment, and synthesis skills.
  • Knowledge of standard measures and statistical tools used in psychology, educational research, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Experience with survey research methods including questionnaire development/testing and survey administration/management.
  • Experience with data management and database development.
  • Expertise with statistical analysis (regression, SEM, etc.) with the support of SPSS or comparable statistical software such SAS, STATA.
  • Experience providing technical assistance and leadership in preparing grant proposals.
    Familiarity with educational research methods including experimental studies using random assignment as well as quasi-experimental designs.
  • Familiarity with current research on STEM teaching and learning.
  • Strong project management, budgeting, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • An ability to work in a team-based environment.
  • An ability to manage multiple evaluation projects simultaneously.
  • Experience publishing research and evaluation findings in journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Experience with the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) data systems and their use in research.
  • Experience using nationally field-tested, standards-based test items (e.g., Project 2061 database)
  • Experience assessing STEM related learning (e.g., science, mathematics and engineering concepts.)
  • Experience teaching at K-12 and university levels.
  • Working knowledge of current K-12 STEM policies and initiatives.
Major duties and responsibilities

This position will primarily serve to assess student learning for Georgia Tech’s NSF funded two projects: Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping Integrated to Unlock Potential (AMP-IT-UP) and Science Learning: Integrating Design, Engineering and Robotics (SLIDER) programs. Attention to detail and an ability to problem solve are essential of all Research Scientists as is the ability to work closely with team members, external vendors, school systems, and other entities to plan and carry out STEM education programs and evaluations. Research Scientists must be able to work with minimal supervision and possess strong communication and organizational skills. This position requires excellent interpersonal/teamwork skills, as well as the ability to handle multiple projects with competing priorities and work under pressure. Additional responsibilities may include: grant writing; working with appropriate units to obtain additional funding; establishing and monitoring budgets with minimal supervision; hiring and supervising coordinator and/or administrative support staff; and maintaining master calendar and timelines for evaluation projects. All CEISMC employment and assignments are ultimately contingent upon outside funding. Because of this funding situation, Research Scientists should remain constantly aware of the need for developing and conducting sponsored research.
