The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Development Program at the Schomburg Center
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The BNY Mellon Pre-Professional Development Program at the Schomburg Center, scheduled to launch in January 2013, will offer paid part-time positions across six unique areas.
The Program aims to help college students cultivate transferrable skills and to provide them with professional experience rooted in a cultural institution. These opportunities are offered in each of three terms per year: spring, summer, and fall. The duration of each position is one term, renewable up to one time. Candidates will receive on-the-job training as well as mentorship opportunities. Each term, candidates will take part in an orientation. In addition, workshops with leaders from the New York Public Library and from the greater New York City community will be held twice per term. Participating students are eligible for college credit, but the conferral of credit is not a Program requirement.
The Schomburg Center is looking for a highly organized, motivated college student to work part-time as a paid Education Pre-Professional. Through one-on-one meetings with a mentor/supervisor, you will have opportunities to discuss career goals and receive professional guidance.
This position is available from January 2013 through May 2013, with the option to renew through August 2013.
Reporting to the Director of Public Education, the Education Pre-Professional is responsible for a variety of tasks within the Public Affairs and Development Department, including:
Creating or helping to create light communications (e-mails and letters)
Compiling program resource packets and mass mailings
Supporting program outreach and marketing initiatives
Coordinating education program RSVPs
Updating the education contacts database
Updating program records and files
Contributing to curriculum and project research
Fulfilling other related duties as required
Current enrollment in an approved undergraduate degree program at an accredited educational institution (major in education, history, liberal arts, or a related field preferred)
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
Strong written and oral communication skills
Interest in education and youth development programming
