The Staff Instrumentation, Electrical, and Controls Technician provides leadership and coordinates all aspects of well site instrumentation, electrical, and process control installation, commissioning, maintenance and operation for production operations. Staff Technician drives requirements specific to supporting production for general automation control, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) data flow, and other operational needs. Ensures SCADA and field automation equipment are configured in accordance with company, industry, and regulatory standards and/or contractual requirements. Position promotes field operational efficiencies, provides troubleshooting support, and serves as in-house subject matter expert to related stakeholders. Champions safety and performs all work in accordance with applicable safety standards.
Pertinent instrumentation includes flow, level, temperature, pressure utilizing MODBUS and HART technologies. Pertinent controls includes RTUs, SCADA, and PLCs. Communications network equipment includes radios (Ethernet, 3.65 GHz and 900 MHz) and cell modems. Electrical equipment includes 480 VAC/3 phase and below. The Staff Technician will work closely with Measurement Technicians for successful measurement and export of necessary SCADA/Operational data from the basin. The Staff Technician will track drilling and completions schedules to manage equipment procurement, coordinate installations, document, communicate, configure and commission any newly installed equipment. Execute field-based system tasks on host SCADA system (CygNet). Tasks also include documentation of necessary information required for system maintenance and upkeep centralized on SharePoint for enterprise access following existing templates and forms along with status updates to other basin personnel for system additions, changes, or requirements. Create and compile technical documentation, including: service manuals, equipment diagram, installation procedures, commissioning procedures, equipment location documentation and configuration information, etc.
Additional required tasks include building RTU, radio, and device configurations for newly installed I&EC equipment using company standard templates and formats, configure and commission new installs with pre-built configurations, program serial and I/P radios for remote and backhaul communications (900 MHz, 3.65 GHz), and verify successful communication and data layout within the SCADA system. Daily tasks include proactively monitoring and managing overall health of SCADA system including: system consistency, communication, performance, data relevance, and basin user support with the support of enterprise resources.
Manages equipment vendors and service companies to ensure product and service consistency and support as required for the instrumentation, controls, and electrical equipment. Direct communication with vendors concerning product issue and functionality; and with service companies concerning procedures and techniques. Along with that comes management of project/operational costs in order to ensure value of purchased products and services.
10+ years of applicable experience
High School diploma
Proficient with National Electric Code/ND Electrician Journeyman license
Working knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers including Rockwell, Schneider
Microsoft Office (Access), SQL 2000/2005
Must demonstrate understanding of:
RTU platforms on the market (ABB, Fisher ROC, Ferguson Beauregard)
480V motor starters and controls
Field instrumentation wiring
Field instrumentation and wiring for tank level transmitters, pressure transmitters, flow meters, and pressure switches
PLCs (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Schneider Telemechanique) wiring and configuration
Liquid measurement using vortex, coriolis, ultrasonic, magnetic, turbine and PD meters
Artificial lift systems and well life cycles
Basic understanding of data acquisition and SCADA systems on the market (ACP, CygNet, Wonderware)
Must possess ability to:
Provide management leadership and lead technical support within the scope of any and all I&EC equipment in the given area.
Solve issues with RTU control and associated electrical equipment used for well control and artificial lift systems (Artificial lift, etc.).
Troubleshoot serial communication failures and TCP/IP session breakdown.
Interpret equipment malfunction through use of SCADA systems.
Provide solutions to operational needs through use of automation/control equipment.
